Description
Trajenta (generic name: Linagliptin) is a prescription medication used for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. It belongs to a class of drugs known as DPP-4 inhibitors (dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors). Trajenta helps to regulate blood sugar levels by increasing the levels of incretin hormones, which in turn increase insulin release and decrease glucagon levels in the blood.
Common uses of Trajenta include:
- Blood Sugar Control: It is used as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
- Combination Therapy: It can be used in combination with other antidiabetic medications such as metformin, sulfonylureas, or insulin, when these alone are not sufficient to control blood sugar levels.
Side Effects: Like all medications, Trajenta can cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them. Some common and serious side effects include:
Common Side Effects:
- Nasopharyngitis: Inflammation of the nose and throat, causing symptoms like a sore throat and runny nose.
- Hyperlipidemia: Elevated levels of lipids in the blood.
- Cough: Persistent cough without any apparent reason.
Serious Side Effects:
- Pancreatitis: Symptoms may include severe and persistent abdominal pain, which may radiate to the back.
- Hypoglycemia: Especially when used with other antidiabetic drugs that can lower blood sugar. Symptoms include dizziness, sweating, confusion, and shakiness.
- Allergic Reactions: Rash, itching, swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, and trouble breathing.
